Challenges and suggestions for raising children with autism spectrum disorder: A literature review

Abstract

Being a parent is a journey that is both rewarding and challenging; however, this journey can be particularly challenging for parents who are raising a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Drawing on secondary sources, this review article aims to synthesize findings from previous research to examine the key challenges encountered by parents of children with ASD. Key challenges identified are related to psychological, social, marital, physical, financial, and behavioral challenges. The review also discusses practical suggestions to mitigate these challenges, focusing on prioritizing well-being, building strong social networks, strengthening marital relationships, exploring different financial resources, and managing behavioral challenges. By discussing both the challenges and solutions, this review article provides valuable insights into how to raise a child with ASD, helping parents navigate this difficult journey with resilience and hope. The article concludes by discussing its limitations and providing suggestions for future research.

Author Biographies

Theary Sun, National Institute of Education

Theary Sun is a PhD student majoring in Curriculum and Instruction at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Cambodia. She completed a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Cambodia, Cambodia and a master’s degree in International Tourism Management from Burapha University, Thailand and Montpellier University, France. She is a teacher of tourism and hotel at the Kampong Chheuteal Institute of Technology (KCIT), Cambodia. Her research interests include education, sustainable tourism development, early childhood education, and special education.

Kimkong Heng, National Institute of Education

Kimkong Heng holds a PhD in Education from the University of Queensland, Australia. He is a Lecturer in the PhD program in Education at the National Institute of Education, Cambodia. He is also a Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Cambodian Education Forum. He was conferred the title of Associate Professor by His Majesty the King of Cambodia in 2023 and was awarded a Community Leadership Award of the Year 2023 by the Australian Alumni Association of Cambodia for his significant contributions to promote research in Cambodia. His research interests include TESOL, teacher education, higher education, and research engagement and productivity.
